My heart is literally pounding for I am angry! Irritated! Astounded! Today I am angry because I finally read the story from Sunday’s New York Times (MASSIVE kitchen re-organizing took over my life this weekend….grueling and intense, but well worth it. I do heart an organized kitchen!!). Did you see this article? If you didn’t, you can check it out here. It’s the one questioning whether or not teachers should be allowed to sell their own lesson plans for profit or whether said lesson plans are actually property of the school. I’ll give you a moment to read and for my heart to slow down. I think I’ll have a seat (prior to now, you should have imagined me pacing and ranting) and put my head between my knees. Ready? I’m feeling a little better now (thank you for asking). Where to begin? I think you can guess where Mrs. Mimi stands on this one! And while I encourage free debate in my comments, may I ask you to choose your words very carefully (VERY. CAREFULLY.) if you choose to comment (read: disagree with me) today. Basically there are many, such as the fine people over at Teachers Pay Teachers (shout out to former NYC teachers….holla!), who believe that yes, this work and these ideas do indeed belong to the teacher. This is probably because these people recognize that most teachers (if not all teachers) create their lesson plans OUTSIDE of school and/or AFTER 3:00. They do this because there isn’t even one single second of time during the day where they might be able to sit down and work out anything coherent…you know, ’cuz their days are filled with things like um, teaching, meeting after meeting after meeting, working with children who need extra help, frantically running to the photo copier, desperately trying to catch up on data collecting, or, you know, eating or peeing. One d-bag quoted in the article (I am debating about whether or not to name him here because he IS named in the article….um, hi, target on your back much? But, have decided he doesn’t even DESERVE naming here in my space – a TEACHER’S space. So we will call him Mr. D-Bag In A Suit since I feel there is no way he is not dry clean only…meaning, there is no way</body-text>

Their goal is to use their journey as a platform for gaining support and protection for North America’s waterways and wild places, while actively engaging over 100,000 elementary and middle school students in their journey though this website and live school assemblies. “We want to educate people about the importance of making healthy choices that simplify life, reduce your global footprint, and provide quality time for friends, family, and outdoor pursuits. We hope to inspire people to make lifestyle changes that are environmentally sound and improve quality of life,” explains Dave. Their odyssey begins by kayak on the Pacific Coast studying temperate rainforests and marine life of the Pacific Northwest, but this is just the first in a series of six stages on their quest to highlight North America's wildest places. After kayaking 1,400 miles from Seattle, WA to Skagway, AK, the team will progress over the history-studded mountains in the footsteps of the Klondike Gold Rush, to the home of Inuit along the Arctic Ocean where polar bears roam. From the Arctic Ocean they will dogsled and canoe south through central Canada, kayak across the Great Lakes, then follow the annual whale migration past the salt marshes and sea turtles of the Atlantic Coast, finishing in the mangroves and coral reefs of the Florida Keys.(See route description for more details) Through lesson plans and daily web updates, elementary and middle school students will learn alongside the explorers through www.wildernessclassroom.com and adults can follow their progress through www.NorthAmericanOdyssey.com. About WCO The Wilderness Classroom started with a simple idea: to improve students' core academic skills and appreciation for the environment by introducing elementary and middle school students to the wonders of exploration and wilderness travel. Eight years and ten expeditions later, the Wilderness Classroom is a 501(c)3 that reaches over 1,600 teachers and 60,000 students around the globe. Our mission has never changed. We seek to instill a lifelong appreciation of the natural world while improving basic skills like reading, critical thinking, and communication by highlighting the joy of discovery. Since it is usually unfeasible to load a classroom of 4th grade students onto a plane and fly them to remote locations, we use a combination of interactive internet-based learning tools on our website www.wildernessclassroom.com, teacher training, and live school programs to accomplish our mission. She said the incident happened about a month ago when her son was attending Travis Elementary School in northeast El Paso. She said he kept falling asleep in class, made noise in the hall, and got down on the floor and refused to get up. "I'm not trying to say it's OK,? Walka told KFOX. ?What he did absolutely was wrong, and he should be punished, because if my child is trying to learn and another child is being disruptive I would have a problem with that."However Walka didn?t think this punishment was suitable for what her son did. She said he didn?t hurt anyone or break anything. The ticket was later dismissed.Walka said her son suffers from Asperger's Syndrome and doesn?t understand what he's doing. After the story aired, KFOX got several e-mails and comments regarding the story from people in Romania, Canada, Ohio and other states. Some of them were from parents who sympathize with Walka and others said the citation was warranted. In part, some of them read, ?I think this punishes the parent and doesn't teach the kid a thing.?Another person wrote "Sometimes giving a ticket is the only way to get the parent's attention, but I wouldn't for this incident."Others who agree with the ticket left comments like, "He has to pay for his mistakes" and "Too bad lady, pay up and shut up."Still Walka thinks it?s not fair. "I didn't disrupt the class so I can?t see why me paying $260 is teaching him a lesson," Walka told KFOX.She said some of the comments were upsetting. Walka said she is doing the best she can taking care of her son as a single parent. She said he has several doctor?s appointments a month and she is having trouble finding a doctor</body-text>

Eight years later, Christy Harp holds the new world record for growing the largest pumpkin and bragging rights over her husband, Nick, for at least one year. Christy’s pumpkin — an Atlantic giant pumpkin — won first place at the Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers annual weigh-off, held Saturday in Canfield. She won $2,500 and set the world record with her whopping 1,725-pound pumpkin. THE CHALLENGE The couple, married for three years, met as students at the University of Akron. Early on, Christy said she mentioned she once grew a 95-pound pumpkin in the eighth grade. “He said he did, too, but I didn’t believe him,” Christy said with a laugh. “He pulled out a picture. I said, ‘We should have a competition.’ ” Christy, 27, grew up as the third generation of her family on a farm in Jackson Township. She graduated from Jackson High School, where she now teaches math and coaches cross country. She lives near her parents and grandparents and all together, they have about 45 acres where they can grow pumpkins. Nick, 26, also grew up with a family of gardeners. A St. Vincent-St. Mary High School graduate, he works as a chemical engineer at Goodrich in Green by day. “By night, he’s out there in the fields till 1 a.m. watering. He has a headlamp that he wears,” said Christy’s mom, Pam Dieffenbacher. Last year, Nick beat Christy by 200 pounds with a 1,081-pounder. “I wanted revenge,” she said. Although it is all in good fun and there are no secrets between them, the pair don’t garden together. “I prefer not to be in the patch at the same time as him,” said Christy, who claims the two argue too much. “Literally, we have a line of plywood down the middle and we don’t cross it. He doesn’t approve of my methods and I don’t approve of his.” “I’m going to have to start,” answered Nick to that, laughing. Nick claims that, as a teacher, Christy has the summer months to pay special attention to her crop. “I</body-text>

Seven murals made by Baltimore City and Baltimore County public school students had been inserted into the large arches, an art project that celebrates the neighborhood's rich history and the creativity of children unfamiliar with Union Square or Hollins Market. They were dedicated at a ceremony Monday afternoon during which teachers, students and administrators came to look at the finished project. When students from Rosemont Elementary/Middle School looked up at the vegetables they had created for one arch they said, "Wow." "It is really cool to see the other ones. And it is great to see the final product," said Riley Delker, 14, who worked on the tile project last year when he was at Catonsville Middle School. Riley and his group had created a mural of H.L. Mencken, a Baltimore Sun writer and author during the early 20th century,</body-text>
